Houston is in Texas, in the South, where summers are hot and humid, winters are short, and severe storms in spring are a fact of life; businesses run air conditioning most of the year and many open early to beat the heat. Getting around Houston is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across Texas's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

I took my fiancé to Sushi Horiuchi for his birthday, and we left saying it was the most memorable dining experience we’ve ever had. The moment we walked in, my fiancé, who has been to Japan, looked around and said, “This feels exactly like Japan.” From that moment on, every detail exceeded our expectations. The atmosphere is beautifully intimate, every course was exceptional, and the experience felt incredibly thoughtful from beginning to end. Chef Hori and Chef Anna are unbelievably talented. We loved that they shared the background and inspiration behind each dish, making every course feel even more special. Jess was equally amazing—kind, professional, and attentive throughout the entire evening. Her service was truly top-tier. We added the classic sake pairing, which I definitely recommend. We were already huge fans of Kata Robata and Katami, but Sushi Horiuchi takes the experience to an entirely different level. This is more than just an incredible meal, it’s an experience that is absolutely worth every penny. My fiancé said it was the best dining experience he’s ever had, and I couldn’t agree more. I’m honestly not sure how I’ll ever top this birthday gift… I guess we’ll

Incredible and beautiful experience. At the beginning of the meal, they explained that they wanted you to feel like you weren’t in Houston for a few hours, and they nailed it. It was so intimate and personal, and all of the dishes were breathtakingly gorgeous with exceptional flavors. I couldn’t pick a favorite, every single dish was excellent. I loved all of the fish and especially the way they used charcoal with many of them. We chose the premium sake pairing and I am convinced it could make anyone love sake. I also loved the chance to talk to Chef Hori and Chef Anna about the food and creativity. Jess provided exceptional service and made the evening feel so special. These reservations are so hard to get, but worth it. Best dining experience I have had in Houston.

SHORT VERSION: A thoughtful, intimate dining experience not to be missed. If you are a fan of Japanese cuisine in any shape Sushi Horiuchi should be on your "Must Dine" list and it is immediately on our 'favorites'. THE DETAILS: Hard reservation to get with there only being six seats available and one seating per night (that's a max of 120 people per month) but worth the effort! The menu is entirely Omakase which in this environment could not ask for a better plan. The dark wooden carving on the wall behind the chefs was not only beautiful but worked as a visual reference for where the ingredients dishes originated. Service was polite, attentive and not intrusive. THE MEAL: Our meal was 21 courses from start to finish and before dessert were offered additional hand rolls if still hungry (we declined as were already quite full). Seafood was from all over Japan and mostly from Hokkaido. There were several items just of the Sakura/Cherry Blossom season some of which for a 2-3 week season yearly which was a special treat. Quickly became friendly with the two other couples. We were all celebrating something whether it was a birthday or an anniversary. At the end of the meal we were al

Dining at Sushi Horiuchi was truly a standout experience. Reservations are incredibly hard to get, but I strongly encourage anyone to keep trying—it is absolutely worth it. The intimate 6-seat counter makes the experience feel personal and immersive, and while it’s a longer dinner, every moment is enjoyable and intentional. You can immediately sense Chef Hori’s passion and dedication—this isn’t just a meal, it’s his craft, and it clearly means a lot to him. Every course was executed with precision, creativity, and thoughtfulness. The salmon skin chips with caviar were especially mind-blowing—one of those bites you don’t forget. As someone who frequently travels to Japan and has dined at many Michelin-starred restaurants, I can confidently say this is easily one of the best omakase experiences in North America and lives up to every bit of the hype. Chef Hori is incredibly humble, and his team delivers warm, genuine hospitality throughout the evening. The matcha service at the end was a refined finishing touch, and the dessert was both unique and whimsical. A truly exceptional experience from start to finish.

There are meals you enjoy, and then there are evenings that imprint themselves on your memory forever. Our night at Sushi Horiuchi was the latter — a breathtaking debut that already feels like a Houston institution in the making. From the moment we took our seats at the intimate six-seat counter, it was clear this wasn’t simply dinner. It was a story unfolding course by course — a love letter to Japan written in rice, fish, fire, and ceremony. Chef Hori guided the evening with quiet mastery, each movement deliberate and reverent. Every piece of nigiri felt like a study in balance — the rice seasoned just enough to lift, never overpower, pristine cuts of fish sourced with intention and treated with deep respect. From buttery toro that melted on contact to delicate white fish kissed with citrus and sea salt, each bite carried both precision and soul. Alongside him, Chef Anna brought grace, knowledge, and warmth, explaining the origins and inspiration behind every course with remarkable clarity. The progression was stunning: pristine sashimi that tasted like the ocean at sunrise; chilled plates layered with texture and subtle acidity; hot courses that introduced smoke, umami, and s
